In November 2022, I began creating music using a pop song structure while playing guitar and a variety of modular and semi-modular synthesizers. I soon developed a formula that would allow me to quickly write, record and edit short songs, set to a template of 50 measures of music at a time, and thus began the 50 Measures Project.

Artistically, these “soundsketches” are an exploration of sonic pattern, collecting various, repetitive samples from different instruments and stringing them together in editing software. They are of a temporary architecture - never really capable of being performed live. Songs are typically 1:40 in length, due to a general lack of deviation from a default 4/4 timing structure at 120 beats per minute.

With few exceptions, each of these songs was written, recorded and edited in one day, typically over the course of 4 to 8 hours. Each song’s title represents the date that it was created. For the most part, analogue and digital synthesizers were programmed to play automatically on sequencers. All sounds except for guitar are created using synthesizers. Mediocre guitar playing is me.

Below are two compilation albums, each ~50 minutes in length, comprising a sampling of 61 tracks from over 200 songs recorded over the course of two years. These songs are presented in chronological order within each album, however the chronology jumps between collections as the second volume was planned later.

A note on deciphering song titles: This song was recorded on February 26, 2023; it was the second song (B) recorded that day; it was written in the key of C minor.

If a letter (B, C, …) is missing from the end of a file name, it was either the 1st or only song recorded on the date listed in the title. If no key is listed, I did not attempt to keep the song within the confines of a particular key.
